Image Map with Hotspots [PowerPoint]

This is a fun little interaction that you can create easily using PowerPoint and with a little creativity.

In Canvas, you will want to create a landing page as well as hotspot destinations (pages). Once you have those ready, you can create an interactive image map in PowerPoint using images, textboxes, SmartArt, or whatever elements you would like to feature.

You can either hyperlink images or shapes on your slide - linking to the target locations in your Canvas course. To embed your interactive PowerPoint image map in Canvas, you will need to log into PowerPoint online. From there you can find the embed code:

File >> Share >> Embed >> [choose the dimensions] >> Copy the embed code.

In Canvas, you can either put the embed code in the HTML editor, or in the Rich Content Editor click on the Embed icon (typically on the far right) and paste your embed code and save the page.

Some considerations for this technique:

If your institution has set your office.com and OneDrive institutional settings so that files cannot be shared publicly, then your viewers will need to be logged into their office365 accounts via their institutional logins. This only needs to be done once until they sign out.

Alternately, you can save your PowerPoint as a .pptx or PDF file and upload the file into Canvas. The disadvantage to this approach rather than embedding is that the PDF/PowerPoint viewer is a little more intrusive and you’ll need to manually set the Link Options to display: Preview inline >> [check] Expand preview by Default. Also, there will be a slight lag displaying the image map with the screen is loading. But this approach obviates the need for people to log into their Office 365 accounts to view the content.
